Bruxism

Bruxism is a common condition that affects millions of children and adults. It refers to the grinding of the teeth and clenching of the jaw. Bruxism occurs both during the day and night. It is a very common sleep disorder and can cause the most damage during sleeping hours.

While Bruxism is considered a habit, an unknown one to many who has it, it can also be caused by stress, anger, anxiety, an abnormal bite or even crooked or missing teeth. It can also be caused by other sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea.

Common symptoms of bruxism, other than the teeth grinding and clenching are chipped, flattened or loose teeth, dull headaches and earache like pains, jaw or face pain or tight jaw muscles. It is important to see your dentist if your teeth have become worn or damaged, and if your jaw is not opening or closing properly.

Depending on the causes and symptoms of bruxism, there are treatment and therapies available to help preserve your teeth, and relieve bruxism. If you suffer from bruxism, call your dentist today to schedule an appointment to help find the treatment for you.
